Cornell University recommends that lawns
should be fertilized two or three times
annually: late spring (around Memorial Day),
early fall (Labor Day), and late fall
(Thanksgiving time)
.
Early spring applications of high
nitrogen fertilizers can encourage
excessive top growth and shallow root
growth that may make turf grass more
prone to diseases and render turf
grass more prone to summer drought
and heat stress damage.  So when it
comes to fertilizing lawns, timing is
everything.
